DALI – everything for lighting control

The DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) system is a modern lighting control standard that reached the global market in the mid-1990s. DALI was developed to create a universal, flexible and efficient lighting control system. The main goal of DALI was to create individual addressing and control of each light source, in contrast to traditional analog lighting networks. First published as a standard in the early 2000s, DALI quickly gained popularity due to its versatility and simplicity. Later, with the advent of DALI-2, stricter certification requirements and additional features such as advanced light level control and better device-to-device interoperability were introduced.

DALI capabilities and benefits

The flexibility and versatility of the DALI system offers many advantages over traditional lighting technology. One of the main features of DALI is the ability to control each light source individually or in groups, allowing you to create a wide variety of lighting scenarios. It is especially useful in commercial and public spaces where dynamic and changing lighting is required. In addition, DALI allows efficient use of energy, as the light intensity can be adjusted according to the time of day or the number of people in the room. Motion sensors and light level sensors can automatically adapt to environmental conditions, reducing energy consumption and increasing comfort. DALI also provides additional functions, such as fault diagnostics or centralized control, which facilitate system maintenance and administration.

Installation of the DALI system

DALI systems are slightly more complicated to install than traditional lighting systems, but offer more flexibility and control. Installation begins with the selection of a suitable DALI power supply, which must provide the required voltage and current for the entire network. The length of the DALI bus can reach up to 300 meters, and the polarity of the wires is not important in this system, which simplifies the installation. It is also necessary to take into account the selection of suitable cables and network topology, which ensure stable and efficient data transmission. After the system is installed, it is necessary to perform addressing and configuration using specialized programming equipment or manual control panels. At this stage, groups, scenes and other system functions are defined.

Technical aspects of DALI

Technically, DALI is a two-wire system that carries both power and data signals. The system works with a nominal voltage of about 16 volts and a maximum current of 250mA. The data transfer rate is 1200 bits per second, ensuring efficient and almost lag-free data transfer. Up to 64 individually addressable devices can be connected in a DALI system, and each device can have up to 16 preset scenes. DALI and DALI-2 are compatible, but DALI-2 offers better device interoperability and more features. DALI luminaires are slightly more expensive than standard ones due to the more complex technology and additional features, but they provide long-term benefits through energy savings and reduced running costs.
